The Illuminated Chakras Anodea Judith, a stunning animation that describes the chakra system and shows the movement of the chakras (which is not possible in books.) This DVD is revelatory in how it illustrates how much energy is available to the human body! KDH
Water Crystals in Motion -- Messages from Water , Masami Emoto, This DVD has helped me to remember miraculous discovery of Dr. Emoto -- that what we speak to water has an incredible and immediate impact on water. We are born more than 90% water and are hopefully still at least 60% percent water at the time of our death. It is fun and intriguing to see Dr. Emoto's experiments on video. A great adjunct to his book and research that appeared in the What the Bleep Do We Know film. KDH
Rivers and Tides , about Andy Goldsworthy an Environmental Artist, a film by Thomas Riedelsheimer, a ravishingly beautiful film, I'm talking ravishing, that addresses the connection between art and nature and ultimately, Direct Experience with nature. Stunning cinematography that captures the timing of nature, the giving of nature and the giving back to nature. KDH
Dolphins , Macgillivray Freeman, incredibly informative, this film shows Union, Direct Experience and Rapture between dolphins and humans. The film was made to create more connection with dolphins in support of saving our oceans. KDH
Music CD:
Moon on the Water by Stan Richardson who plays the shakuhachi flute. Peaceful, moving -- great music to stir creative juices. This is a two CD set wherein Richardson incorporates some stunning natures sounds on the second disc. KDH
B-Tribe has several very juicy cds: 5 (that is the title); Sensual Sensual ; Spiritual Spiritual ; Suave Suave . SF
Returning by Jennifer Berenzen:- breath and sound invoking the Great Goddess, recorded in the Oracle Chamber in the Hypogeum at Hal Salfieni, built by the neolithic peoples of Malta. Gorgeous, hypnotic. SF
Namaste is a mix for contemplation and introspection by various world music artists...it's very beautiful. SF
The Lover and the Beloved - Donna De Lory is exquisite, feminine, devotional Indian chants.SF
Books:
The Zen of Creativity by John Daido Loori Roshi, abbot of Zen Mountain Monastery. John Loori Roshi is an award winning photographer, videographer and author of many books on Zen. Loori guides the reader into direct experience via the use of koans--unanswerable questions that break open the mind to direct experience-- as a way to take photos, paint, write or make any kind of art and become more intimate with beauty. SF
This is one of the best books I have ever read. In addition to what Sheila writes I would like to add that Daido stresses seeing with the whole body and mind. KDH
Awakening to the Dream: the Gift of Lucid Living , by Leo Hartong is a beautiful, clear description of what it is to be awake as we go about our ordinary lives. He discusses enlightenment, ego, the myth of individual identity, watching the play of consciousness and enjoying it. SF
The Eight Human Talents by Gurmukh is a beautiful and very human look at the chakra system. Simple yogic breathing and posture recommendations are offered to deal with specific energy blocks. Gurmukh addresses creativity, depression, radiance... This is a great book to get to know your body better. KDH
The Creative Habit , Twyla Tharp, this book is a must to help build daily creative habits. Tharp addresses music, movement, dance, writing and the visual arts by offering a life time of experiences and exciting exercises to nurture creativity. She does a great job addressing the body/ mind connection and how the brain comes alive with movement in ways it can not in sedentary positions. KDH
At Hell's Gate: A Soldier's Journey from War to Peace by Claude Anshin Thomas. Claude is a Buddhist monk who went to Viet Nam at 17 and was ravaged by the war, the killing he did, the denial and exclusion he experienced when he returned.... he has lived in the hell realms and eventually ended up at Thich Nhat Hanh's monastery.
Claude speaks of war as something we all participate in all the time--how we are at war with ourselves, with our addictions and our wounds, with each other. He speaks about meeting the moment and finding peace in each moment, opening to what is as it is, and bearing witness to suffering, our own as well as others'. Claude is eloquently holding both war and peace together in his heart, showing a way to do this. SF
The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien is a 'true' fiction he wrote about men at war in Viet Nam. It is a beautiful, compelling, poetic collection of stories that illuminate the capacity and the limits of the human heart and soul. O'Brien writes: "war is hell, but that's not the half of it, because war is also mystery and terror and adventure and courage and discovery and holiness and pity and despair and longing and love...." I was very moved by this book and found the writing beautful. SF
